The announcement of Tobia’s proposal drew concern and frustration last week from some local firefighters and their supporters.
“It’s come to a point where the Republican party is not the party I belong to,” Di Francesco said. “It’s against everything I was taught to do.”
A note posted to the school advisory council’s website following the meeting said the vote was final and the school would “not revisit the matter.”
The vaccinations will happen Saturday at the Health Department clinic in Viera, and are by appointment only, the district said in a news release.
The vote was unanimous in favor of changing the mascot, with 13 voting members supporting the change, including three student representatives.
A proposal from the school advisory committee in August to retire the mascot and nickname sparked controversy among alumni and community members.
In a statement, university President T. Dwayne McCay called Rosiene’s death a “painful loss for the entire Florida Tech family.”
The decision came two days before Edgewood High is slated for a final vote on a controversial proposal to retire its longtime “Indian” mascot.
“We’re being thrown under the bus, … being shunned and bullied, because we feel these measures are too far,” Ashley Hall said.
While the idea is not especially far-fetched, it’s not likely Brevard students will be required to get the shot, if and when it becomes available.
The rates are up, but some students in the class of 2020 may not have passed their state exams.
The provisions were originally guaranteed in the federal Families First Coronavirus Response Act, which expired at the end of December.
