“keeping our citizens safe is our number one priority” – Sheriff Wayne Ivey
Crime rate decreased by 7.2% for unincorporated areas of Brevard County compared to 2018
BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Recently, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and Federal Bureau of Investigations released the Annual Uniform Crime Rate (UCR), which reflects crimes reported during 2019 and I am extremely proud to share with you tonight that once again our Crime Rate for the unincorporated areas Brevard County reflected a significant decline.
The UCR total index crimes focuses on 7 areas that include Homicide, Robbery, Rape, Burglary, Aggravated Assault, Larceny/Theft, and Arson.
The annual 2019 UCR data reflects a significant 5.7% decrease in the reported Crime Rate as compared to 2018, with an overall decrease of 33.08% for the areas of our responsibility since January 2013.
Even more impressive and exciting for our community is the fact that while our Brevard County population continues to grow our Crime Rate has now reached it’s lowest point in the past 25 years.
The crime rate, which is comparable to all communities is the percentage of reported crimes for every 100,000 citizens decreased by 7.2% for the unincorporated areas of Brevard County as compared to 2018.
As an added bonus, tonight am even more excited to share with you that for the first six months of this year (January 1, 2020, through June 30, 2020), the UCR data for the unincorporated areas of Brevard County and the jurisdictions we are contracted to provide law enforcement services reflected a total crime index rate that decreased by an additional 12.98%.
While there are many factors that can impact the crime rate, there is no question that we have observed a significant change in our crime rate because our agency aggressively goes after criminals and the amazing partnership we enjoy with our citizens.
By working together to prevent and solve crimes we have made a huge dent in our Crime Rate like no other time in recent history.
This is also an opportunity to brag about the incredible members of your Brevard County Sheriff’s Office who work hard every day to keep our community safe.
Regardless if they serve as a Patrol Deputy, a Correctional Deputy, a School Resource Deputy, a Maritime Security Officer, an Animal Services Officer or Communications Officer, each has a unique responsibility and role in our agency as they all work together 24 hours a day, 365 days a year as one team with one mission, to keep our communities safe.
I have always believed that the only way to truly impact crime is to partner with our citizens and to provide them with vital crime prevention information before they become a victim, not after.
By partnering together we give our citizens every opportunity to protect themselves, their homes, and their businesses so that they don’t become crime’s next victim.
While we are extremely fortunate to have lowered our Crime Rate by over 33% in the past 7 years, we need to keep in mind that now is not the time to let up, but instead is the time to remain laser-focused and boldly state that while lowering our crime rate is our goal, keeping our citizens safe is our number one priority.
On behalf of the 1,500 proud men and women of our agency that I have the honor of serving with, we hope you truly know how much we appreciate your incredible support and partnership as we all work together to keep Brevard County a safe place to call home.
