"I would imagine that it took every ounce of courage they had to forge forward" - Sheriff Ivey

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – As the sun started to shine on our little piece of the world this morning, June 6, I can’t help but think what this day must have been like for so many brave American soldiers 78 years ago on the beaches of Normandy.
I think about how frightened they must have been as they fought and died to protect the very freedoms we often take for granted, freedoms that make our country the greatest place on earth.
I can only imagine what raced through their minds that day as most were barely out of high school, fighting on foreign soil against human atrocities.
All for our country and the freedom of nations all around the world that needed our help. I can only imagine that they were thinking of their families, their friends and their homes so very far away.
What they didn’t think about though was surrendering to the forces of evil that were waiting for them as they approached that coast, a coast that would soon turn red with their blood and that of fellow patriots!!
I would imagine that it took every ounce of courage they had to forge forward, with so many sacrificing their heroic lives in the protection of future generations.
That type of bravery, patriotism, and courage deserves to always be remembered and never overlooked regardless of what challenges we face in our world today.
So on behalf of our entire agency, many of which are proud veterans, we ask that you please take a moment to remember their bravery on “D-Day,” and the many lives that were sacrificed to provide us the freedoms we enjoy in this great nation!!
