BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – I wanted to update everyone on the status of our Deputy, Paul Phillips who was seriously injured Tuesday evening after being shot in the line of duty.

Early Wednesday morning, Paul underwent hours of surgery to treat his injuries as a result of the incident.

Following his surgery, he was briefly in recovery and was then moved to his room late yesterday afternoon.

I want you to know that Paul is receiving excellent care and is being treated by an excellent team at Holmes Regional Medical Center who are treating him as if he was one of their own family.

Paul’s Doctors have shared with us that his prognosis for a full recovery is very encouraging and we are thankful that he is progressing as well as could be expected given everything he has gone through.

Deputy Paul Phillips, 35, previously served for 16 years in the U.S. Army prior to joining BCSO in November 2018, the agency says.

He is in excellent spirits and without question is ready to get back to work as soon as he can!

There is no doubt that number of guardian angels were working Tuesday evening, as Paul won the battle after facing an ambush styled attack, a neighbor risked injury or possibly death to pull him to safety, his squad members responded to his side and applied tourniquets, our brothers and sisters at BCFR provided emergency medical care and the staff at Holmes Regional Medical provided excellent care and support!

When I arrived at the hospital the halls were lined with our Deputies, FHP Troopers, Melbourne PD, BCFR and the hospital security and medical team.

As you can imagine the scene was very emotional as Paul, who was in obvious pain, was alert and talking to assure everyone he was going to be ok.

I would like to personally thank everyone who has called, emailed, texted, and prayed for Paul’s recovery as it without question demonstrates the strength of our community and why Brevard County is such an amazing place to call home!!

Please continue to keep Paul and his family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time and know in your hearts how grateful he is for your love and care!
