'I support Mac McLouth for the seat'

Port Canaveral Commission District 5 candidate Dave Netterstrom announced he has pulled out of the race and is endorsing Mac McLouth for the seat which includes Cocoa Beach, Cape Canaveral and Merritt Island.

BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA BEACH, FLORIDA – Port Canaveral Commission District 5 candidate Dave Netterstrom announced Thursday that he has pulled out of the race and is endorsing Mac McLouth for the seat which includes Cocoa Beach, Cape Canaveral and Merritt Island.

Netterstrom served as the mayor of Cocoa Beach from 2012 to 2015 and was a city commissioner from 2010 to 2012.

“Its just not the right timing for me now,” said Netterstrom. “I support Mac McLouth for the seat.”

McLouth, a Republican, said he decided to run at the urging of other port commissioners and trusted friends who often rely and call upon his intimate institutional knowledge and enthusiasm for Port Canaveral.

McLouth’s expertise and experience at Port Canaveral go back more than 51 years when in 1967 as a first-term port commissioner, he proposed that the authority make a pitch to the then brand new Walt Disney World as its “outlet to the sea” for both goods and people.

“I feel that I have a lot to offer Port Canaveral and I’m at the peak of my knowledge, energy and understanding of where the port has come from, where it is now and where it needs to be in the future,” said McClouth.

In addition to McLouth, other candidates vying for the Port Commission seat 5 are Democrat Maurice Boudreau, and Republicans Robyn Hattaway and Tim Macy.

Tom Weinberg, a two-term District 5 Port Canaveral commissioner, announced in February that we won’t seek re-election.

Two other Port Canaveral commissioners are also up for re-election this year including District 3’s Wayne Justice and Jerry Allender of District 1. Currently, Democrat Elizabeth Lark-Riley is running against Justice, who is a Republican. Allender is currently unopposed.

The other port commissioners include Bob Harvey of District 4 and Micah Loyd of District 2.
