ABOVE VIDEO: Launching The World’s First 3D Printed Rocket
BREVARD COUNTY • CAPE CANAVERAL, FLORIDA – The first ever 3D printed rocket Terran 1 will attempt a launch to space on Wednesday from Cape Canaveral by Relativity Space.
The launch window is open from 1-4 p.m.
This launch of Terran 1 is the first orbital attempt by Relativity and will not include a customer payload.
The mission is called ‘Good Luck Have Fun.’
“In some ways, I suppose we can once again thank SpaceX for providing a whole new generation of rocket engineers to do the next generation of entrepreneurship in space and space launch,” said Florida Tech Associate Professor Don Platt.
Standing 110 ft. tall and 7.5 ft. wide, Terran 1 is the largest 3D printed object to attempt orbital flight. As a two-stage, expendable rocket, Terran 1 has nine 3D printed Aeon engines on its first stage and one Aeon Vac on its second stage.
Like its structure, all Relativity engines are entirely 3D printed, and use liquid oxygen (LOX) and liquid natural gas (LNG), which are not only the best for rocket propulsion, but also for reusability, and the easiest to eventually transition to methane on Mars.
