BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA –  Florida Tech first-year chemical engineering major Jack Brophy has been honored as the 2021 recipient of the Florida Tech/Jacksonville Jaguars STEM Scholarship.

The $5,000 award is funded by the Jacksonville Jaguars Foundation.

“It’s our honor for the Jaguars Foundation to support homegrown talent like Jack as he begins his college career at Florida Tech,” said Peter Racine, senior vice president, Jaguars Foundation – Community Impact.

“His passion for STEM academics is evident in his high school accomplishments, and we’ll be cheering from the sidelines as he takes this next step in his education. We can’t wait to see what innovations he brings back for the benefit of the First Coast community.”

Beginning with the 2019 football season, Florida Tech became the official STEM education sponsor of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Among their recent collaborations was a STEM lab that opened recently at Andrew Jackson High School of Advanced Technology in Jacksonville.

“It’s our honor for the Jaguars Foundation to support homegrown talent like Jack as he begins his college career at Florida Tech,” said Peter Racine, senior vice president, Jaguars Foundation – Community Impact.

The scholarship will help Brophy, a Jacksonville native and recent graduate of Bishop Kenny High School, pursue his chosen major: chemical engineering.

“I have always been interested in science, and when I took my first chemistry class, I knew I found something I loved,” he said.

“I chose to major in chemical engineering because I like the fact that chemical engineers get to work with cutting-edge technologies to improve the quality of people’s lives in areas such as the environment, energy, health, and food production. I hope to eventually have a career that will allow me to better people’s lives through chemistry.”

A top student in high school, who excelled in AP courses in chemistry and physics and in honors calculus, Brophy succeeded in and out of the classroom.

He won second place at the Florida State Science and Engineering Fair and helped propel his high school golf team to the state championships twice. The owner of a hole-in-one – achieved when he was 16 – Brophy also enjoys kayaking, reading, traveling and running.

He is looking forward to Florida Tech’s renowned hands-on learning – and the rest of the excitement that comes with a Panther education.

“I like the fact that Florida Tech offers research and project-based opportunities and promotes hands-on learning, which is my favorite way to learn,” he said.

“I am also excited to have the ‘college experience’ – meet students from diverse backgrounds, participate in college activities, and make great memories.”

Brophy said he is grateful for the scholarship.

“It is an honor to be chosen,” he said. “I would like to thank the Jacksonville Jaguars and Florida Tech for their generous support of my endeavors to become a chemical engineer.”
