WATCH: A State of Emergency has been declared for Brevard County effective at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, in response to the pending threat of Hurricane Ian. Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey gives an update on Hurricane Ian and how it will impact the community and BCSO.
BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – A State of Emergency has been declared for Brevard County effective at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, in response to the pending threat of Hurricane Ian.
As the storm edges toward Florida, the decision has also been made to close Brevard County Government offices and cease non-essential operations effective at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
The County will then go to Level 1 activation, which means essential personnel will be in place to respond to any impacts related to Hurricane Ian.
A local state of emergency is declared in advance of potential disaster event and enables government entities to readily seek response or recovery assistance from the state.

A decision on when to return to normal County Government operations will be made as soon as an accurate assessment on weather conditions and any ongoing related issues can be made, and will be communicated through Brevard County department leadership and through local media outlets.
Also announced on Tuesday, County-run landfills — Central Disposal Facility in Cocoa, Sarno Transfer Station in Melbourne, and Titusville/Mockingbird Transfer Station — will closed at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday and will remain closed until further notice.
