event will be at the Merritt Island Public Library
BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA – The Space Coast Weavers & Fiber Artists will meet at 9:30 am Saturday, April 23 at the Merritt Island Public Library, located at 1195 N. Courtenay Parkway.
Mary Egbert of Rockledge will be demonstrating how to Dye Yarn and Animal Fibers.
Egbert will be dyeing wool yarn with professional acid dyes using a low immersion technique. This allows you to dye in small amounts of water instead of a large pot of, often boiling, water. Dyeing your own yarn gives you endless possibilities of colors!
She will explore creating dye colors using primary colors, colors blending during the dyeing process, making pastels, gradients, ombres, and even sprinkles, All this gives you the opportunity to make exactly what you want, not just what the yarn store happens to have in stock.
Egbert’s fiber journey started when she had a herd of 25 alpacas.
She learned how to wash, dye, prep, and spin and soon was selling her handspun yarns. Egbert is a fiber arts teacher and the owner of Camaj Fiber Arts. She has taught at venues such as Ply Away, Michigan Fiber Festival, and the Southeastern Animal Fiber Fair.
Her live classes are now available online at Camaj School of Fiber Arts. Her passion for fiber, learning, and research help her students master spinning, scouring, prepping, and dyeing.
SCW&F meetings are free and open to the public. Since 1983 SCW&FA has been Brevard’s go-to guild for fiber arts: spinning, weaving, basketry, rug hooking, and more.
The guild helps fiber artists, beginning or advanced, learn through workshops and the informal exchange of ideas. They also work to educate the public about fiber arts.
