BREVARD COUNTY • PALM BAY, FLORIDA – It’s a great day Palm Bay! On Sunday, September 11, the City of Palm Bay held its inaugural Patriot Day Remembrance Ceremony.

The ceremony included guest speakers, a bell ringing ceremony, and a moment of silence.

It is our duty and obligation to ensure none of the lives lost on that dreadful day were forgotten, and that ceremony honored them well. I want to extend a sincere, heartfelt thank you to everyone who came to pay tribute.

On September 19, the City held a naming ceremony for Patrick Woodard Memorial Park. Formerly known as Oakwood Park, it is located at 490 Koutnik Road SE in Palm Bay. Pat Woodard was a lifelong resident of Brevard County and was a resident of Palm Bay for eighteen years. He provided dedicated service to the City of Palm Bay as a member of the City Council for nine years, and we were #PalmBayProud to rename the park in his honor.

The Palm Bay Public Works Department has been hard at work with the $150 million GO Roads paving program. As of September 2022, more than 287 miles, or 36.4% of the total 791 miles of roadway, were completed.

Phase One is fully completed and Phase Two projects are well underway, with 74% of the roadways complete.

The GO Roads paving program, in conjunction with the City’s stormwater program, represents a meaningful step in addressing the City’s long-neglected municipal infrastructure. Visit www.pbfl.org/GORoads for more project updates.

October 1 represents the beginning of the new fiscal year for the City of Palm Bay.

The City has adopted an ad valorem tax rate of 7.5995, maintaining the current year tax rate and exceeding the 3.0% CAP rate of 6.7770 to fund critical needs for the upcoming fiscal year.

A total of $2.5 million in General Fund capital investments are approved, including vehicle and heavy equipment replacements, public safety and radio equipment, and projects including traffic signal cabinets/response and building security.

In addition, a $1.0 million transfer to the Road Maintenance Fund is approved with a continued focus on reaching the goal of a $4.0 million annual contribution to road maintenance needs.

I would be remiss if I did not recognize the Jewish faith’s holiest, most important day of the year, Yom Kippur. Known as the “Day of Atonement,” it begins at sundown Tuesday, October 4, and ends Wednesday evening, October 5, marking the end of the Jewish high holy days and offering people a chance to change their fate through prayer, repentance, and charity.

October 13 marks the 247th birthday of the U.S. Navy.

The central theme of this year is “On Watch – 24/7 for 247 Years,” which highlights our Navy’s enduring ability to remain fully ready to respond to and effectively deter emergent threats. Join me in wishing all our sailors a happy birthday!

Twisty Cone Inc., located at 1615 Georgia Street NE, has been recognized as the Mayor’s Business Spotlight recipient for the 4th quarter of 2022.

Not only have they provided Palm Bay residents with a family-friendly place to grab a sweet treat over the past 40 years, but they’ve also demonstrated what it means to be a community partner by continually giving back through various donations and sponsorships to Brevard County Schools & Libraries, local churches, Breast Cancer Awareness, Operation Gratitude for troops overseas, various City Departments such as Palm Bay Police and Fire Departments, and many others.

Twisty cone has a proven business model with a track record that includes workforce growth, increased revenues, and capital improvements that have improved its ability to serve customers with the same product and quality customer care that they have provided since its establishment in 1982.

Twisty Cone offers customers a nostalgic experience by serving original menu items while occasionally updating their menu with new items to include 30+ flavors of soft-serve ice cream, personalized cakes and desserts, Hawaiian shaved ice, and hot items like hot dogs, nachos, and pretzels.

I’ve been able to not only enjoy Twisty Cone myself over the past 34 years, but so have my children and grandchildren, and they love it. If you go there, make sure to get the ‘Mayor’s favorite’…strawberry shortcake with extra cake!

If Hurricane Ian showed us anything, it’s that we are still in the midst of hurricane season, and as Floridians, we know that tropical weather is an unfortunate but inevitable part of life here in the Sunshine State. When it comes to hurricanes and tropical storms – it’s not a matter of “if” but “when.”
