Controlled burns designed to get rid of underbrush safely

Space Coast residents may see smoke from two controlled burns in Brevard County, according to the Brevard County Emergency Management Office. Controlled burns, which are conducted by the St. Johns River Water Management District, are designed to get rid of underbrush safely so they don’t provide fuel for out-of-control fire and also assist in restoring native habitats.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Space Coast residents may see smoke from two controlled burns in Brevard County, according to the Brevard County Emergency Management Office.

The first is a 260-acre burn within the Pine Island Conservation Area, west of Pine Island Road in Merritt Island.

The second is a 298-acre burn at St. Sebastian River Preserve State Park, east of I-95, north of 54 Canal Road in Fellsmere.

Controlled burns, which are conducted by the St. Johns River Water Management District, are designed to get rid of underbrush safely so they don’t provide fuel for out-of-control fire and also assist in restoring native habitats.
