BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – In 2016 Deputy Sheriff John Jeffreys was at the hospital on an unrelated call when he observed a little boy in the Emergency Room with a broken leg.
John could tell that the young man was hurting and went over to spend a few minutes with him in an effort to cheer him up as he gave him one of our agency’s challenge coins.
What John didn’t realize at the time was the lasting impact his brief visit and moment of kindness would have on the young man and his mom.
Recently, John who is now a Sergeant with our agency was at the gym on his day off when he was approached by the young man’s mom who showed him the attached photo on her phone, and asked if that was him.
John acknowledged being the Deputy in the photograph and was then thanked by the mom for the act of kindness he shared with her son that day.
The mom went on to tell Sgt. Jeffreys that her son cherishes the challenge coin and carries it with him everywhere he goes. She also shared with John that because of his actions, her son now wants to become a law enforcement officer so that he can help others during a time of need.
Before she left the young man’s mom told John that she has saved that photograph for years, in hopes that one day she would run into him somewhere and could truly thank him for sharing that moment with her son.
I am so proud of John and our entire team for all they do to not only keep our community safe but also to make our agency shine bright each and every day as one of the most professional agencies in the country.
