SCAM ALERT: Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Warns Residents of Telephone Scams Trending in the Area

Message from Sheriff Wayne Ivey

In this latest barrage of telephone scams, the caller pretends to either be a law-enforcement or an attorney who advises the intended victim, that a relative is in some sort of trouble requiring a large sum of money to help them.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – In this latest barrage of telephone scams, the caller pretends to either be a law-enforcement or an attorney who advises the intended victim, that a relative is in some sort of trouble requiring a large sum of money to help them.

The scammer informs the intended victim that they will send a courier to pick up the money in order to expedite getting help to their loved one.

The perpetrator then sends some type of rideshare or courier service to the victim’s residence to pick up the money. In furtherance of the crime, the scammer generally has some type of information regarding the relatives names, and other personal information, which is unfortunately convincing a large number of our seniors to believe that the caller is telling the truth.

The primary targets of the scams are seniors and while it’s easy to say “I would never fall for such a scam,” unfortunately a large number of citizens across the country have already fallen victim and lost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office is encouraging residents to be aware of these types of scams and to share this valuable information with everyone they know, especially our seniors, who are often targeted by these piece of crap thieves.

Please make sure that everyone is well aware that law enforcement and true officers of the court, such as attorneys, would NEVER contact them in this manner and would NEVER send a courier to pick up the money to help a relative in need.

A great rule to follow to avoid being the victim of telephone scams is to let your answering machine or voicemail be your filter. NEVER answer a telephone call from an unknown number and if you encounter any type of similar call, please hang up the telephone and immediately contact your local law enforcement agency.

Remember what I always say…”it takes a community to protect a community” so please be sure to share this valuable crime prevention information with everyone you know, so we can all work together to keep Brevard County one of the safest places to call home
