BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Space Coast League of Cities has opened the 2023 scholarship applications, where scholarships of up to $2,500 are available to Brevard County residents earning a degree or pursuing a skills/trade program related to areas of public service.

The application can be found on the Space Coast League of Cities’ website, and completed applications are due by June 16, 2023.

The scholarship program makes a direct impact on the lives of local students and for many, also provides encouragement as students are shown that people in their community support their dreams and goals.

Evan Karcher, a previous scholarship recipient and current student studying Civil Engineering at the University of North Florida, said, “The Space Coast League of Cities Scholarship has allowed me to continue my education while providing guidance and support. Being recognized by leaders in my community is a special honor, one I care deeply about, and I am excited to continue working with them to better my community.”

The Satellite Beach resident was one of five scholarship recipients last year, and the League hopes to reach more students every year with the program.

In order to apply, students must be pursuing a declared major in Information Technology, Civil Engineering, Public Administration, Human Resources, Accounting, Finance, Urban planning, Environmental Engineering, or Leisure Services or enrolled in the CFLGE Certification in Florida City and County Management at Florida State University.

If a student is pursuing a skills/trade program, they are welcome to apply if they are in any of the following programs: Water Distribution, Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators, Building Inspector, Plans Examiner, Certified Professional Public Buyer (CPPB), Certified Public Procurement Officer, IT Support Specialist/Computer Technician, IT Network Administrator/Senior Network Administrator, HVAC, Plumbing, or Electrical, Dispatchers, Police Officers, or Firefighter/EMT.

Along with the application, students will need to submit a GPA record, a copy of their current voter registration or preregistration, and at least one letter of reference from a faculty member.

Scholarship recipients will be notified prior to being invited to the Space Coast League of Cities meeting on August 14, 2023, where they will be recognized and receive their awards.

While Brevard County is home to many talented and bright individuals, students can have financial barriers to their educational journeys and the League wants to continue supporting our local students as they work hard and find careers and pathways that excite them.

This great work is not accomplished alone but with support from generous local businesses who want to invest in the community and our students.

Regular scholarship sponsors include Florida Power & Light Company and Waste Management, and every dollar goes directly to the scholarship award recipients.

“FPL is pleased to partner with the League and provide scholarships to students across Brevard County,” said Michele Murrell, External Affairs manager at FPL.

“Supporting our local students and help further their education is one of the ways that FPL works with the communities we serve to make Florida an even better place to work and raise a family.”

Scholarship sponsors are invited to the August 14th League of Cities meeting to meet the recipients and accept a plaque in appreciation of their support. To sponsor a scholarship, email Diana Adams, Scholarship Chair, at DAdams@westmelbourne.gov.
