Murder Charges are in connection to the shooting death of 17-year-old Mercutio Burford
BREVARD COUNTY • TITUSVILLE, FLORIDA – Laneitri Rollins, 14, of Mims, is facing adult prosecution for Second-Degree Murder in the shooting death of 17-year-old Mercutio Burford on Feb. 9 in Titusville.
“Today (March 10), Judge Christina Serrano signed an Order of Transfer moving the prosecution of Laneitri Rollins from the Juvenile Court to the adult Circuit Court,” said Todd Brown of the State Attorney’s office.
“The action came after prosecutors direct filed an Information charging Rollins with one count of Second-Degree Murder Reclassified While Inflicting Death in connection to the shooting of 17-year-old Mercutio Burford.”
Titusville police spokesperson Amy Matthews said officers responded to the 900 block of N. Washington Avenue on Feb. 9 at 1 p.m., where Burford was found dead near a bike path, having suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
According to the State Attorney’s Office, the subsequent investigation used crime scene, video surveillance, and intelligence information to identify Rollins as a suspect. Investigators later recovered the suspected firearm used by Rollins at the time of the murder.
Rollins was then arrested on Feb. 11 by Titusville police detectives and initially held at the Juvenile Detention Center.
“With today’s action, Rollins will be transferred to the Brevard County Jail with No Bond,” said Brown.
