SUSIN ELECTED BPS BOARD CHAIR

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Newly-elected Brevard County School Board members Gene Trent and Megan Wright have made an immediate impact on the direction of Brevard County public schools by teaming up with longtime BPS Board Member and newly-selected Chair Matt Susin to remove Mark Mullins as superintendent.

After electing Susin as BPS board chair in a 3-2 vote, Trent, Wright, and Susin immediately moved to fire Mullins, who took over as BPS superintendent in June 2018. However, Mullins avoided being fired and said he would resign before his fate went to a vote of the board.

“I am proud of the contribution I have made to our kids and families over nearly 30 years of service, and I admire and respect the thousands of Brevard Public Schools employees who go to work each day with the mission of serving our students with excellence as the standard,” said Mullins in a statement.

“Their dedication is a reason Brevard Public Schools is one of the highest-performing school districts in the state. Although the majority of this board desires to go in a different leadership direction, I will always be a fan of Team BPS.”

State Rep. Randy Fine, and frequent critic of the direction of the school board over the last few years, praised the BPS board’s decision to fire Mullins.

“Mark Mullins, the Brevard County Superintendant that said that ‘parents are not qualified to have an opinion about their children’s education’ was just fired by the Brevard County School Board,” said Fine.

“I look forward to partnering with the new majority to restore quality education in Brevard.”
