BREVARD COUNTY • PALM BAY, FLORIDA – Are you interested in online learning for your student but don’t have the time to be the teacher at home? The Puzzle Box Academy Teen Education Center, located at 125 East NASA Boulevard in Melbourne, is the ideal solution.
The Puzzle Box Academy’s goal is to increase its student’s academic gains by using the Morningside Model of Generative Instruction (MMGI).
This tailored program for PBA is designed for students to catch up, build up, and get ahead and at Puzzle Box Academy, they have done just that.
“Puzzle Box Academy does not have a one size fits all classroom model,” said Pamela Furr, CEO and Founder of Puzzle Box Academy.
“Our students are homogeneously grouped by core subjects, including reading, math and language arts/writing. Therefore, here at Puzzle Box Academy, our student’s instruction is tailored to their skill level which allows for less sub-grouping and differentiation within the classroom environment.”
By using the MMGI approach Puzzle Box Academy is helping to fill in the gaps necessary to move from pre-requisite skills to higher learning skills.
“Our goal is to help build the students’ self-confidence by allowing them to work towards making the necessary gains to move up or down the curriculum tracks at their own pace,” said Furr.
Puzzle Box Academy’s teachers teach using the methods for instruction that include Direct Instruction, Choral Responding, Precision Teaching and Classroom Management. The use of the direct instruction curriculum allows the teachers to focus on specific skills and allows the students to progress at their own rate.
“The students need strong skills in all learning channels such as visual, auditory and written,” said Furr. “Choral Responding (group responding) allows the teacher to analyze all responses in real-time which drives the instruction.”
The use of Precision Teaching allows for daily data collection to be analyzed which leads to greater academic gains and helps guides the student’s overall academic progress. The use of effective classroom management skills allows for high rates of positive reinforcement to keep students motivated and engaged.
Through the implementation of the MMGI model at Puzzle Box Academy, learners have made great gains.
During the 2017-2018 school year, the annual assessment data (Woodcock Johnson Test of Achievement IV) showed that students made an average of 1.75 years of growth in the area of Math Fact Fluency and more than 1.5 year’s growth in their phonetic decoding/word attack skills.
“Many of these learners came in with academic deficits and had been unable to make those gains in a more traditional school setting,” said Furr.
“We continue to work diligently to continue this progress as we continue this collaborative model. During the 2018-2019 school year, the annual assessment data showed that 60 percent of the student population made a year or more gains in math and phonetic decoding reading skills.”
Puzzle Box Academy not only serves students academically but also offers Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Therapy.
There are Board Certified Behavior Analysists (BCBAs), Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analysts (BCaBAs) and Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) on staff that works closely with the teachers.
Students are pulled from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. for 1:1 services tailored to teach social skills, life skills, adaptive daily living skills and communication skills. For all other students that do not receive 1:1 services, they are also learning social skills, life skills and daily living skills.
