WATCH REPLAY: During a more than a six-hour contentious meeting on Thursday night in Viera, the five-member Brevard Public Schools Board hashed out the controversial question: to mask students, or not to mask students when school starts next month.

BREVARD COUNTY • VIERA, FLORIDA – During a more than a six-hour contentious meeting on Thursday night in Viera, the five-member Brevard Public Schools Board hashed out the controversial question: to mask students, or not to mask students when school starts next month.

During a special board meeting last May, board members voted 4-1 in favor of making masks voluntary after the end of the school year.

In a proceeding that included several recesses due to heated exchanges and audience expulsions, the BPS board is considering a defining vote to change that decision during the next board meeting on Aug. 10.

BPS District 3 Board member Jennifer Jenkins initiated the debate in the context of the new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) direction that face masks be worn in schools for students over 2-years old.

The possibility of a special meeting was discussed, and BPS District 1 member and Board Chair Misty Belford, and BPS District 4 member and Vice-Chair Matt Susin, said they didn’t favor that option.

BPS District 5 member Katye Campbell said she may favor the option of mask requirements on school buses that Jenkins suggested.

In other meeting business, BPS Superintendent Mark Mullins detailed the 2021-2022 budget and an audit for the director of equity and diversity.
