When We Were Shuttle details what made the program special and why it was necessary. The documentary also reveals how their involvement with the Shuttle impacted their lives, their families, and the greater community of Florida’s Space Coast.

Through their recollections and personal archive, When We Were Shuttle gets to the core of the humanity behind the program, gaining a unique, grassroots look at the way Shuttle affected life in the Sunshine State, from the thriving aerospace industry it sustained to the dramatic impact the decision to retire the Shuttle had when the program ended in 2011.

Unlike other documentaries which offer a top-down approach, focusing on the narratives of astronauts and figureheads, When We Were Shuttle delivers the compelling viewpoints of those “Rocket Ranchers” who worked in the trenches during the Space Shuttle years. As both NASA and now companies in the private sector push to make space travel more cost-effective, reliable and ultimately more routine, the social history captured in this story offers viewers a more holistic framework for understanding our collective spaceflight history, giving us, in turn, a better platform for determining not just where we might want to go in our continued exploration of space, but how we go about doing it.

When We Were Shuttle will have its television broadcast premiere on PBS stations WUCF Channel 24 in Central Florida and WLRN Channel 17 in South Florida on Wednesday, Nov. 16, at 8 p.m. The world premiere screening of When We Were Shuttle is a production of WLRN Public Television for South Florida in collaboration with Central Florida Public Media Stations, WMFE and WUCF.
