BREVARD COUNTY • TITUSVILLE, FLORIDA – Apollo Elementary welcomed Kentrell Martin, the creator and author behind the beloved “Shelly’s Adventures” book series.
During this special visit, Martin imparted a valuable educational experience to students spanning all grades by introducing them to over 50 essential words in American Sign Language, such as greetings, phrases, letters, numbers, colors, and animals.
Martin engaged with the eager students by introducing them to his book, “Shelly Goes to the Zoo.”
The story revolves around Shelly, a young girl who is deaf, as she embarks on a zoo adventure with her family. Throughout the narrative, the characters communicate using ASL, providing readers with multiple instances to learn and appreciate the art of ASL.
Martin later revealed that the creation of Shelly’s Adventures stemmed from his desire to bridge communities and acquaint families with ASL and Deaf culture.
Throughout his interactive presentations, Martin employed various memory-testing activities, aimed at boosting the students’ confidence in using ASL for communication.
Remarkably, by the conclusion of these sessions, the students had progressed to the point of engaging in full-fledged conversations in ASL.
Martin’s visit not only left a lasting impact on the students but also contributed to the broader goal of promoting inclusivity and understanding within Apollo Elementary.
