BPS After-School Activities, Athletics and Extracurriculars Canceled Today Due to Expectation of Severe Weather

Brevard Public Schools have been working closely with Brevard County Emergency Management to monitor today’s weather forecast and issued the following announcement:

With the expectation that inclement weather could reach Brevard County this afternoon, all BPS after-school activities, athletics, and extracurriculars are canceled for January 9.

BPS After School Care will remain open and operate on a normal schedule. We will continue to monitor the weather and will provide an update if there are any further changes to normal operations.

The safety of our students, staff and families is our top priority. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Tuesday will be an active weather day, starting with windy conditions in the morning & afternoon, followed by strong to severe thunderstorms in the late afternoon and evening. The potential for strong to severe thunderstorms in the late afternoon and evening has increased. NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA –Tuesday will be an active weather day, starting with windy conditions in the morning and afternoon, followed by strong to severe thunderstorms in the late afternoon and evening.

Southerly winds increase to 20-30 mph with gusts 35-45 mph in the late morning and afternoon ahead of the thunderstorms coming later in the day.

While these winds are forecast to diminish in the late afternoon, the arrival of storms will maintain a wind threat into the evening.

The potential for strong to severe thunderstorms in the late afternoon and evening has increased. Severe thunderstorms will be capable of locally damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph, and one or two potentially strong tornadoes.

Thursday: A 20 percent chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 67. North northeast wind 5 to 10 mph.
Thursday Night: Showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 59. East northeast wind 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
Friday: A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 81. Windy, with a south wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.
Friday Night: A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 57. Windy, with a south southwest wind around 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph.
Saturday: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 66. West northwest wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
