BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Brevard Public Schools hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for a new classroom building at MILA Elementary in Merritt Island.

MILA Elementary was the first multi-room elementary school on Merritt Island, built during the space program boom in the 1950s.

The school, which is nearly 70 years old, will open a new classroom building next school year.

Groundbreaking on the new building was held this week and Brevard Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Mark Rendell, School Board Vice Chair Gene Trent, and Principal Dr. Dawna O’Brien led the festivities and discussed the importance and need for this project.

The new building will have eight classrooms and be approximately 15,600 square feet. This construction will replace Building Nine and serve exceptional education, pre-kindergarten, and kindergarten students.

The project also includes a covered play court, a new parking lot and car loop, other site improvements, and the demolition of Building Nine.

The new building is scheduled to be open by January 2025, and the entire project will be completed in the summer of 2025.

Brevard Public Schools thanks Heard Construction, Inc. and DAG Architects Inc. for partnering on this project.
