BREVARD COUNTY • MIMS, FLORIDA – Brevard Public Schools eighth-grade students from Johnson Middle School embarked on a field trip to the Harry T. & Harriette V. Moore Cultural Complex in Mims.

The field trip made possible with support from the Brevard Schools Foundation, proved to be a dynamic experience for the students. During their visit, students delved into the rich history and enduring legacy of Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore, notable Brevard educators and committed citizens.

The Moores made significant contributions, registering over 100,000 Black voters in the State of Florida. They explored the museum, visited a replica of the Moore residence, and engaged with the Civil Rights Trail.

Celebrating its 20th year, the Moore Cultural Complex has forged a strong partnership with Brevard Public Schools. Spanning from January 17 to April, the Moore Cultural Complex will serve as a hub of learning for our 8th-grade students.

These field trips will offer an immersive journey into the past, fostering a deeper understanding of the Moores’ enduring influence.

Thanks to the advocacy of the Brevard Federation of Teachers, the Brevard County School Board passed a resolution in February 2021 to honor the Moores’ legacy and encourage widespread learning about their impactful lives.

Subsequently, a comprehensive curriculum was developed for fourth-grade, seventh-grade, eighth-grade, and high school U.S. History classes.
