Edgewood chapter of The Children’s Hunger Project presented charity with $2,100 donation.
BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – During the school year, many students know that a hot breakfast or filling lunch will be available during the day. Unfortunately, after the bell rings, those children might not have the same experience at home.
The Children’s Hunger Project seeks to put food on the table for those children in need and is reliant on charitable donations. On July 14, the Edgewood Junior/Senior High School chapter of The Children’s Hunger Project presented the charity with a $2,100 donation.
Research shows that food insecurity is linked to decreased success in an academic setting. No Kid Hunger has expressed that food insecurity affects a child’s memory, concentration, mood, and motor skills.
Over 70,000 people within Brevard County do not have access to sufficient food to meet their basic needs. Whether it is caused by rising utility costs or inflation, Brevard County’s food insecurity rate of 11.4% is higher than both the state and national rates.
Serving Brevard County for 13 years, The Children’s Hunger Project seeks to offer prepackaged meals for children facing food insecurity.
Edgewood chapter leaders William Struble, Thejas Kumar, and Arnav Jain, alongside their sponsor, Meredith Reninger, presented Cheryl Cominsky, Executive Director of The Children’s Hunger Project, with the donation.
The chapter’s donation will allow the local charity to provide meals to 11 children for an entire year. It costs $190 to feed a local child in need for a whole year.
As the school year begins, the Edgewood Junior Senior High School chapter will focus on several fundraising events throughout the year including the Health First Fight Child Hunger 5K which is normally held in January.
In addition, the chapter hopes to increase membership amongst its student body as well as raise awareness within the community and expand other fundraising efforts.
Looking ahead to 2023-24 school year fundraising efforts, Struble said, “The Edgewood Junior/Senior High chapter of The Children’s Hunger Project wants to make a meaningful change to reduce food insecurity in Brevard County. Students can and do create change. From raising funds to participating in packing events, everyone’s assistance can make an impact to better our community.”
The Children’s Hunger Project aims to provide food over the weekend to children in need. The charity believes that this food support will lay the foundation to allow children to better learn when they return to school during the week.
