a sneak peek at some of the tips customers will learn in House of Savings
BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Even though extreme cold is rare in Florida, sudden cold fronts can significantly increase energy bills, as heating your home uses two to three times more energy than cooling.
To help customers stay warm while keeping their energy bill cool, Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) has launched a winter edition of its augmented and virtual reality experience, House of Savings, which shares eight easy ways customers can save this winter.
For every completed experience, FPL will donate $2 to Care To Share, a program that helps individuals and families who are experiencing temporary financial difficulties to keep their lights on. Since launching House of Savings this summer, customers from across the state have already raised $22,000 for Floridians in need.
Here’s a sneak peek at some of the tips customers will learn in House of Savings:
- When heating your home, set your thermostat to 68 degrees or cooler. For every degree you lower your thermostat during colder weather, you’ll save about 3-5% on your monthly heating costs. Then, set your ceiling fan to spin clockwise to push warmer air down.
- As an alternative to heating the entire home, you can stay warm and save money by using space heaters or electric blankets. Remember to use space heaters safely – only for limited amounts of time and in small areas, unplugging them when you leave the room.
- Set your water heater from 140 to 120 degrees, and you’ll still have plenty of hot water.
- Weatherizing your home by insulating the attic, hot water pipes or a water heater can reduce your heating and cooling costs by up to 15%. You can save up to $1,420 with FPL’s ceiling insulation rebate and IRA tax credits when you use a preferred independent contractor.
