The sizzling summer sun is raising temperatures across Florida, and as you crank up the A/C to stay cool, it quickly becomes the largest driver of your monthly energy bill. By making easy, low to no-cost changes throughout your home, you can help keep your bills under control this summer.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The sizzling summer sun is raising temperatures across Florida, and as you crank up the A/C to stay cool, it quickly becomes the largest driver of your monthly energy bill.

By making easy, low to no-cost changes throughout your home, you can help keep your bills under control this summer. This way you have more time to enjoy the sunny days, whether hosting a barbeque, relaxing by the pool, or taking a weekend trip.

Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) is sharing five easy ways customers can save up to $30 a month toward their monthly energy bill and beat the heat this summer:

■ Set your thermostat to a temperature that’s comfortable for you between 74 and 78 degrees and remember that for every degree above 74 you can save three percent on your monthly cooling costs. If you plan to take a vacation, set your thermostat to 82 degrees before you leave.

■ To keep the sun, and heat, out, close shades, blinds, and drapes whenever possible. When using ceiling fans, remember – they cool down people, not rooms. Ensure fans are turned off when you leave the room. Also, set your fan to counterclockwise for maximum comfort

■ Lower your water heater temperature to 120 degrees to save energy while still getting plenty of warm water. If you won’t be home for an extended period of time, turn off the circuit breaker to the water heater

■ Use the cold water setting when doing laundry to save energy as a load using cold water costs $0.10 and a load using hot water costs $0.90. Washing in cold water also helps keep your clothes from shrinking or fading.

■ Small appliances and electronics, such as toaster ovens and gaming consoles, still use energy even if they are turned off – accounting for 23% of the overall energy use*. Unplug these smaller devices when not in use to avoid phantom energy usage.

Bonus tip! For residents with pools, set your pool pump to run no more than six hours a day to avoid unnecessary energy consumption.
