Florida Tech Panthers Forward Sesan Russell Signs Professional Contract with Germany’s Sparkassen Stars

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Former men’s basketball player Sesan Russell will continue his playing career after he signed a professional contract with the Sparkassen Stars of the ProA league in Germany this week.

The ProA is the second-tier league of professional basketball in Germany. The league was founded in 2007 and currently consists of 16 teams that participate in a 34-game regular season across the country.

The Sparkassen Stars are a professional basketball club located in Bochum, Germany. The club was founded in 2011 and has been a member of the ProA league since the 2022-23 season.

“I’m so happy for Sesan with his signing to play professionally in Germany,” said Florida Tech head coach Billy Mims. “His work ethic and commitment to the game are as good as any player that I have coached.”

“Sesan was a dominant player in our program, in the SSC, and in the entire country. I have no doubt he has what it takes to succeed at the professional level.”

“As a career starter, Sesan did it all for us at Florida Tech. He could score from anywhere on the court, made his teammates better with his passing, and was a force to reckon with on defense.”

“Sesan will always be remembered as one of the finest to put on a Panther uniform and I have been blessed to be able to coach him. The Sparkassen Stars have made a great choice and I know that the fans in Germany will love him as well.”

Russell wrapped up his career with Florida Tech after five seasons in which he appeared in 92 games with 89 starts and totaled 1,645 points. The London, England native ranks among the top 10 in program history in several categories including career points scored (1,645), points per game (17.9), and is the all-time program leader in assists with 442.

During the 2022-23 season with the Panthers, he appeared in 25 games with 24 starts. He finished second on the team in scoring with 18.9 points per game and led the conference in assists with 7.0 assists per game. Russell’s performance on the court earned him Second Team All-SSC honors in his final season.

The 2023-24 ProA season is scheduled to begin in late September and goes through April. Sparkassen’s first game is scheduled for September 30 against the Nurnberg Falcons.
