Florida Tech Panthers Torie Whitbeck Earns SSC Women’s Swimmer of the Week Honors

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – In the first weekend of swimming in the Sunshine State Conference (SSC) and the fifth week of SSC Weekly Awards, freshman Torie Whitbeck was named the conference’s Women’s Swimmer of the Week, as announced by the league Monday Afternoon.

This is the first time the freshman has been honored with the award in her career. She is the first woman to win the award for Florida Tech since Savannah Brennan last earned the award on November 11, 2018.

against Rollins on Saturday, September 30th, Whitbeck helped the Panthers to a 90-79 finish in the meet, as she took home two first-place individual finishes and helped with a relay win.

In her collegiate debut meet and race, the Oklahoma City, Oklahoma native recorded a win in the 100-yard Backstroke with a time of 1:00.03. In her second event of the meet, the 200 Yard Backstroke, Whitbeck continued where she left off, winning with a time of 2:09.28, six seconds ahead of the next closest competitor in the event.

Swimming leadoff backstroke in the Women’s 200 Yard Medley Relay, Whitbeck was able to get her team, which consisted of herself, Rae Ann Dressel, Christina Ramierz and Maja Malarz, out to a lead with a time of 28.80 seconds. The team ended up winning the medley relay with a time of 1:50.34.

The Panthers will return to the pool on Saturday, October 7th at 12 P.M. at the Nina B. Hollis Wellness Center Pool in Lakeland for a Sunshine State Conference meet against Florida Southern.
