Woodyard is an intern at Northrop Grumman
BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – In this Scholar-Athlete Spotlight, we are featuring Florida Tech men’s rower, Justin Woodyard. This summer, the St. Petersburg, native is gaining meaningful experience at an internship in his desired field. We caught up with Woodyard to learn more about the incredible opportunity.
■ What company are you interning for this summer? What was your title and role with the company?
Northrop Grumman – Mass Properties Engineer Intern
■ What drew you to this internship?
I wanted to pursue this internship because I saw it as an opportunity to learn about the most advanced aircraft in the world from experts currently working in the field that I am pursuing.
■ What are some exciting tasks that you have been able to be a part of?
I supported flight test engineers weighing an aircraft. I also tracked the weight performance of an aircraft relative to the program objectives.
■ How is your internship preparing you for a career you would like to do after graduation?
This internship shows the organization and teamwork among departments to successfully make deadlines to complete a project. Also, this internship shows the real-world tools used in the industry and I am learning how I can relate classroom experience to the industry.
■ What is your major at Florida Tech? Why did you choose this direction for your education and is this something you always wanted to pursue?
I am studying aerospace engineering. Growing up watching the space shuttle take off, my love for Motorsports, and my desire to learn how complex systems work, have all influenced my goal to become an engineer.
■ How has being a collegiate athlete prepared you for the work you are currently doing? What traits did you take away from the playing field that is helping you throughout your internship?
Being a collegiate athlete has helped me lead through hardship and adversity. Jumping into a new team and learning the goals fast and effectively has given me the opportunity to present my project to managers in the program.
■ What skills did you acquire at the internship that you plan to bring back to help lead the Lacrosse team?
I learned how to effectively convey an idea in as few words as possible since most of our presentations to lead engineers are done on PowerPoint.
■ What advice would you give another athlete/prospective athlete who is looking to pursue the path you’ve taken?
Jump at every opportunity you are given even if you do not know how to do it at the beginning.
