Florida Tech Scholar-Athlete Spotlight Recognizes Volleyball Player Lexi Lueger

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Being a scholar-athlete at Florida Tech takes an incredible amount of hard work and dedication to excel both in the classroom and on the field.

In this Scholar-Athlete Spotlight, we are featuring Panther volleyball player Lexi Lueger, a sophomore who is majoring in Electrical Engineering.

An outside hitter from Seneca, Kansas, Lexi transferred to Florida Tech last summer from Johnson County Community College and helped provide an immediate impact. Lueger recorded 104 kills and 21 total blocks in 22 matches in 2022 as Florida Tech had its highest win total in seven years.

Following the season, Lexi was named to the State Conference Commissioner’s and Florida Tech Athletic Director’s Honor Roll with a 4.0 GPA!

With Lexi’s first year at Florida Tech winding down, we sat down with her to talk with her about what made her choose Tech and what she’s looking forward to both on and off the court in the coming year.

■ What’s your major at Florida Tech, and why did you choose this? Is it something that you’ve always wanted to do?

My major is chemical engineering, I originally wanted to be a doctor and I was a biology pre-med major, but then I took my one and a half years of biology classes and decided biology is just not for me. It’s too much memorization and chemistry and math, it’s more like understanding and actually applying that knowledge, so I decided on that.

■ What was it about Florida Tech that made you want to be here?

I knew I wanted a degree in chemical engineering, I wanted warm weather (laughs) and I also wanted Division II volleyball. So, I made a list of all the schools that have those things, and went on a couple of visits, but when I visited here, I knew that it was the one.

■ How do you plan to use your degree after graduation?

It’s still TBD but it’s a really diverse industry, so if I don’t enjoy the first thing that I choose, there’s always something completely different in the field.

■ What are some of the exciting projects that you’ve been able to work on in classes here?

I really haven’t done a lot of projects yet, because I’m still a little early in my degree. I’m only about two years in but we’ve done some research on chemical power plants and things like that and that was interesting.

■ Volleyball season starts almost as soon as students return to campus for the fall and there is so much that goes in those three months of the season. How do you keep everything balanced with so much to do?

Well, I definitely try to set time away for myself. Do one nice thing a week at least for myself, and that I always make a list and try to complete those things in order of highest priority to lowest priority.

■ How has being a collegiate athlete prepared you for what you’re doing now and what do you take from the court that you apply to your studies?

Yeah, I really feel like it’s taught me how to persevere and learn through failure. It’s okay if you fail at something because then you can try again and probably do better on your next attempt.

■ What advice would you give to an athlete coming to Florida Tech that has an interest in Chemical Engineering?

I would say definitely make sure you enjoy chemistry and math because it’s the entire ordeal of that major, but if you know that you like those things, then I would definitely say it’s worth it because it’s a really interesting field.

■ What was your favorite memory of this past season?

I would say Embry-Riddle, it was just a game that was kind of a turning point for us to know that we’ve really improved so much from the previous year. So just coming in and beating a rival like that just gave us a spark.

■ What are you most excited about heading into the 2023 season?

I’m really excited to just be with a lot of the same girls again, we really didn’t lose a whole lot of people, so I’m really excited to just play another year with my team and see how far we can get.
