BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Space Coast Daily Sports Editor Juan Rodriguez shared his top three takeaways from Brevard County High School football Week One action.

■ The Merritt Island Mustangs have the potential to be better than people expected. The Mustangs came into the season with a few question marks starting a sophomore quarterback and having only nine seniors. I don’t think anyone predicted Merritt Island to hang up 49 points in the first game of the season.

It is just week one but there is no question this team plays hard and for each other. Coach Murray continues to draw up very effective offensive game plans and got the most from players including his young quarterback Shaun Hartman who finished with three passing touchdowns.

If Merritt Island continues to put up points and play sound defense like they did against Deltona. The Mustangs have the pieces and coaching to make some noise this season.

■ Cocoa Tigers didn’t miss a beat to start the season. The scoreboard signifies the game was very close (which it was), but the Tigers start right where they left off and that’s with a big win. Around the county, people saw the first three games Cocoa played and wondered if they could come out with a single victory in any of those match-ups.

Well, Cocoa got their revenge on Jones after falling to them in last year’s season opener and the momentum from this win should give the Tigers a better chance to defeat Venice next week at Dick Blake Stadium.

■ Heritage Panthers make a statement in their first game under head coach Mykel Benson. The Panthers entered the season with significant hype with all the changes made to the program this off-season. Heritage cruised past Satellite with a big 40-0 shutout win.

Now some people will say, “well that’s Satellite, wait until they play a stronger opponent.” Although Satellite doesn’t rank among the strongest teams in the county, they fell short just one point from eliminating Rockledge in the postseason last year.

Quarterback Joseph Tenta finished with four passing touchdowns as the senior QB displayed significant improvement and great command of the offense. Heritage is set to host in-town rival Palm Bay on Friday.
