BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – A 13-year-old child was shot early Monday near the area of the intersection of North Wickham Road and Fountainhead Boulevard after she and a group of her peers had been confronted by an adult male motorist driving a white truck or sport-utility vehicle, accusing them of throwing rocks at his car.

According to police, the girl was not seriously injured, suffering a superficial, non-life-threatening wound to her arm.

Officials received a call at 12:09 a.m.

“When officers arrived on the scene, they received another call-for-service within Sabal Palms Apartments from a 13- year-old female advising she had just been shot,” said a Melbourne Police spokesperson.

According to officials, the juvenile was later treated at Melbourne Regional Hospital for a superficial, non-life-threatening wound to her arm. Detectives with the MPD Criminal Investigations Division subsequently assumed the investigation.

According to police, the juvenile informed detectives that she and a group of her peers had been confronted by an adult male motorist driving a white truck or sport-utility vehicle, accusing them of throwing rocks at his car.

“The juvenile alleged the male began shooting toward the group, who dispersed back into the apartment complex,” said a police spokesperson.

“During the same timeframe of this incident, Melbourne Police had received other calls-for-service from motorists complaining of juveniles throwing rocks and cinderblocks at passing vehicles in this area.

“As a result of this information, detectives believe this is an isolated incident and have no reason to suspect an active or ongoing threat to the community.”

Detectives continue to investigate this incident and ask that anyone with information call the Melbourne Police Department at 321-608-6731 to speak with a detective or call the Central Florida Crime Line at 800-423-TIPS.
