Merritt Island Little League Advances to State of Florida Senior Softball Tournament at Zephyrhills

LITTLE LEAGUE ACTION: THE FRIDAY NIGHT LOCKER ROOM ON SPACE COAST DAILY TV

Florida District 22’s Rockledge Little League hosted the 8/9/10 Section 3 Tournament at McLarty Park on Saturday. Merritt Island LL advances to the State of Florida Senior Softball Tournament at Zephyrhills Little League with play scheduled to start on Friday, July 7.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Florida District 22’s Rockledge Little League hosted the 8/9/10 Section 3 Tournament at McLarty Park on Saturday.

■ In the first game, District 19’s Lake Mary LL (v) met District 11’s Navy Ortega Lakeshore LL (h).

Lake Mary opened the game with a 16-run first inning and added 6 more runs in the second. Navy Ortega Lakeshore received a run from B.Fields in the second inning. Lake Mary ended the game in the third inning, with a 28-1 score, led by 2 doubles and 4 runs scored from W. Bernstein.

■ In the second game, Navy Ortega Lakeshore (NOL) LL (visitor) played against District 22’s Indian River City (IRC) LL (home). NOL had a double from V. Pineda and runs scored by Pineda, T. Terry, B. Pullen, and H. Spicer.

But it wasn’t enough as IRC’s Drake Dehler and Colton Hill combined on the mound for a 15-4 win in four innings. Easton Edwards had a double and 3 runs scored while Dehler, Anthony Perucca and Waylon Schell added 2 runs each.

■ In the third game at McLarty, Indian River City (v) battled Lake Mary (h) to a scoreless game after 5 innings. In the sixth, Indian River City’s Drake Dehler reached base and scored on a single to centerfield from Easton Edwards. Edwards took second on the throw home, but was stranded on base.

In the bottom of the sixth, Lake Mary’s C. Anderson drove in A. Rios on a single to left field. IRC intentionally walked W. Bernstein to load the bases and then N. Ritchie singled to drive in A. Sucre for Lake Mary’s 2-1 win.

With the win, Florida District 19’s Lake Mary Little League advances to the State of Florida 8/9/10 Baseball Tournament with play scheduled to start on Friday, July 7th, at Winter Garden Little League.

■ In other District 22 action at Florida Section 3 tournaments on Saturday, Port St. John LL’s 10/11/12 Softball team lost 12-2 to District 19’s Lake Mary LL in their opening game at St. Augustine LL, but returned to win their next game against District 11’s Yulee LL team by a score of 20-14.

Lake Mary shut out Yulee 15-0 in the third game to claim the 10/11/12 Softball Section 3 title and advance to State.

■ In Junior Softball at Palm Coast, Merritt Island LL lost 8-1 to District 11’s San Mateo LL. Merritt Island won against District 19’s Palm Coast LL, 14-10, in that tournament’s second game. San Mateo won the third game 5-1 over Palm Coast to claim the Junior Softball Section 3 title and advance to State.

■ For the Senior Softball division, also in Section play at St. Augustine LL, Merritt Island LL defeated the District 11 combined team from Callahan-San Mateo-Yulee LLs 16-3 in Game 1 of that tournament.

Merritt Island’s Rindi Amos had a double while she and Shae Janke scored multiple runs. Merritt Island returned in Game 2 and won 18-4 over Cal-San-Yulee, led by singles from Kendall Lawrence, Emma Finney, and Kayla Sanchez, with a double by Rindi Amos Amos also tripled in the first and scored twice in the game while being the game’s winning pitcher.
