Merritt Island Man, 33, Arrested After 2-Hour Standoff With SWAT in Cocoa

A 33-year-old Merritt Island man with a lengthy history of armed burglary crimes was taken into custody Tuesday, following a more than 2-hour standoff with Cocoa patrol officers.

BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – A 33-year-old Merritt Island man with a lengthy history of armed burglary crimes was taken into custody Tuesday, following a more than 2-hour standoff with Cocoa patrol officers.

At approximately 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, patrol officers responded the area of N. Indian River Drive near Olive St. after a resident called to report a suspected burglar was inside the home.

When officers arrived, the suspect fled. Officers quickly secured a perimeter around the area. A short time later, patrol officers located the suspect hiding inside a vehicle parked next to a home on Highland Dr., and quickly surrounded it.

The male suspect was armed with handgun and was suicidal.

Officers maintained the perimeter and called for assistance from the SWAT and Crisis Negotiation Team.

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office and Rockledge Police also assisted during the standoff.

The suspect was taken into custody at approximately 1:30 p.m.

The suspect is identified as Peter Steven Samonas.

He is now facing charges of armed burglary for at least two incidents that occurred on Tuesday and another that occurred on Monday in which he stole the firearm.

Samonas was taken to the hospital for medical evaluation after which he will be taken to the Brevard County Jail.

Samonas was released from prison last March after serving more than 10-years in prison for armed burglary and theft. He was released on bail for drug related charges after being arrested in mid-June by Brevard County.
