BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Military Officers Association of America Cape Canaveral Chapter’s monthly luncheon keynote speaker was Bud Murphy, the Deputy Director for Region 3 of the Seniors vs. Crime project.

This is a non profit organization with the primary goal of reducing the victimization of senior citizens who are often targeted for specific crimes based on their age.

What began as a crime prevention program, involving seniors in educating other seniors, evolved into a statewide program providing direct services to seniors who may have been victimized or otherwise taken advantage of by businesses or service providers.

The project now has 40 offices throughout Florida and has been successful in assisting thousands of seniors.

Murphy and Office Manager Jim Malcolm explained how the project works, how to file a complaint form, and what documentation should be submitted so a volunteer can be assigned to an individual’s case.

The project’s services are free. However, it does not provide legal advice, assist with legal proceedings, or provide legal services or legal representatives. Any case involving a criminal offense is turned over to the proper law enforcement agency for appropriate action.

The project accepts cases where one party to the conflict is a Florida resident or Florida business. If no party involves Florida, the project will not take the case.

Most of the cases involve Florida seniors.
