WASHINGTON, DC – Republican Ohio House Representative and House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan announced he is running for Speaker of the House after former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., was ousted, as Speaker – a first in the history of the nation.

Eight Republicans voted on Tuesday with every present Democrat to vacate the speaker’s chair. The final vote was 216 to 210 in favor of McCarthy’s ouster.

Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., introduced a measure against McCarthy known as a motion to vacate on Monday night, accusing him of breaking promises he made to win the speaker’s gavel in January.

Jordan is the first GOP lawmaker to put his hat in the ring for what’s sure to be a competitive race. He said on Wednesday morning that he would step up to run for the job. House Republicans plan to hold a candidate forum next Tuesday and an election the following day.

Jordan is a founding member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, serving as its first chair from 2015 to 2017, and as its vice chair since 2017.

He was the ranking member of the House Oversight Committee from 2019 to 2020. He vacated that position to become the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, of which he became chair in 2023.
