BREVARD COUNTY • PALM BAY, FLORIDA – Former Palm Bay Police Commander Tim Zander was recently named Chief of Police for the Melbourne Beach Police Department. He retired after 24 years of dedicated service to the Palm Bay community and its citizens.

During his tenure, he served in numerous positions in the Palm Bay Police Department, including Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer, Honor Guard, Special Investigations Agent, Field Training Sergeant, Special Investigations Sergeant, Patrol Lieutenant, Uniform Services Division Captain, Investigations Division Commander, and Support Services Division Commander.

The Melbourne Beach Police Department was created in 1947 at which time there was just one Police Officer, Chief Orval Gardenour, serving a population of 100 residents. The Chief answered calls for service 24 hours a day driving his 1938 Hudson.

In those days, apprehending turtle poachers and helping tourists dig their cars out of the sand was all in a days work.

The Melbourne Beach Police Department is a full service law enforcement agency providing service 24/7.
