BREVARD COUNTY • PALM BAY, FLORIDA – The Palm Bay Police Department recognized longtime volunteer Jim Piason with this month’s VCOP Spotlight.

Jim started volunteering at the Palm Bay Police Department in 2022 when a friend suggested it would be something to do in retirement.

As a child, Jim wanted to be a policeman, but life took him in another direction. Even then, in his job at Verizon, he frequently interacted with State Troopers. Later in life, Jim became an entrepreneur.

Married for 57 years, Jim has a wife and two children: a son in Arizona and a daughter in Florida. Jim also has one granddaughter in her teens and three grandsons in their 20s.

In his spare time Jim enjoys reading books, playing video games, such as Strat-o-Matic Baseball using historic ball players, and of course, watching the New York Yankees play ball.

Jim and his friend patrol together twice a week and usually have some sort of interesting occurrence.

Their experiences have included dealing with an injured raccoon, watching a CSI investigation, and finding a lost dog for a 90-year-old. In addition to his weekly patrol, Jim also provides traffic support at parades and other functions.

If you would like to be a VCOP like Jim, contact 321-953-8987.
