PUBLIC SERVICE: Cocoa Police Chief Evander Collier IV Administers Oath to New Police Officers

Both officers will spend the next several months in training

Cocoa Police Chief Evander Collier IV administered the Police Officer’s Oath Wednesday evening, to the agency’s newest police officers. Officer Arwen Halverson and Officer Michael Pedersen were sworn in during a special ceremony immediately following their graduation from the law enforcement academy at Eastern Florida State College.

BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – Cocoa Police Chief Evander Collier IV administered the Police Officer’s Oath Wednesday evening, to the agency’s newest police officers. Officer Arwen Halverson and Officer Michael Pedersen were sworn in during a special ceremony immediately following their graduation from the law enforcement academy at Eastern Florida State College.

Both officers were hired by the City as police officer trainees while they were enrolled in the academy.

They are now serving as fully sworn police officers, receiving all associated salary and benefits.

Officer Arwen Halverson is originally from Florida, but was raised in the State of Texas. She returned to Florida about eight years ago.

In May of this year, Halverson earned her bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Central Florida. She became a volunteer with the police department and also participated in an internship where she became interested in pursuing a career as a police officer.

She then enrolled in the law enforcement academy and graduated on Wednesday evening. Officer Halverson is the youngest of 8 children.

Officer Michael Pedersen is originally from the Pacific Northwest. He served 20-years with the U.S. Coast Guard, retiring with the rank of chief petty officer from the Coast Guard Cutter Confidence out of Port Canaveral. His father served in the U.S. Air Force. He is married and has one sister. He has several four-legged children, including at least 4 French Bulldogs, and 1 English Bulldog. He and his wife operate a bulldog rescue organization in Brevard County.

Both officers will spend the next several months in training where they will learn the department’s policies and procedures. They will be paired with a field training officer and learn all facets of the job.

Upon successful completion of the training, they will be assigned to a squad for patrol duties.
