The Space Coast Daily–Friday Night Locker Room team released the 2023 Top 7 Power Rankings for Week 4 Brevard County high school football.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Space Coast Daily–Friday Night Locker Room team released the 2023 Top 7 Power Rankings for Week 4 Brevard County high school football.

2023 Brevard County High School Football Top 7 Power Ranking – Week 5:

■ 1. Cocoa (2-1) – The Tigers will look to rebound following the controversial ending vs St. Thomas Aquinas in Week 3. After having a week to process the loss on a bye week last week, QB Brady Hart heads into Week 5 having a fantastic start against stiff competition in his sophomore season. He boasts a 71% completion percentage with 1,024 passing yards, 10 touchdowns and 4 interceptions in the 2023 season. His lead wide receiver, junior Jayvan Boggs is having a spectacular start to his season by amassing 442 receiving yards and 7 touchdowns in three games. Friday will be a test for Cocoa as Eau Gallie comes to town and will look to knock off the No. 1 Cocoa Tigers.

■ 2. Eau Gallie (4-0) – The Commodores have had an impressive start on the season by getting big wins over Springstead (3-1), Winter Haven (2-1) and Bishop Moore. After coming off a dominating 35-7 win over Satellite in Week 4, Eau Gallie hopes to ride the momentum Friday night and get a signature win over No. 1 Cocoa this Friday in Week 5.

■ 3. Rockledge (2-2) – The Raiders faced  *No. 20 Seminole in Week 1 and **No. 7 Duncanville in Week 2, both resulted in losses. Since then, Rockledge has outscored their last two opponents 80-21 and earned two nice wins over Viera and Bayside. Rockledge will face the winless Osceola Kowboys on Thursday, which has the potential to be a blowout if Rockledge plays like they have the last two weeks.

■ 4. Merritt Island (4-0) – One of the surprising teams in Brevard County has to be Merritt Island and the job Head Coach Tyler Murray has done in his second season as the Mustangs head coach. The offense is prolific and dangerous when they find their rhythm. Led by sophomore QB Shaun Hartman, the Mustangs also boast an explosive rushing attack and an efficient aerial attack. The Mustangs have outscored their first four opponents by a total score of 163-20.

■ 5. Titusville (4-0) – The most surprising team this season thus far are the Titusville Terriers. The job head coach John Holmes has done in a short amount of time is quite remarkable, considering where this program was before Coach Holmes came along. Holmes helped lead the Terriers to playoffs last year and he has this team look like a playoff team, once again. Coming off a 16-10 win over Palm Bay last week was a statement win, along with a win over Yulee earlier this year has solidified this Terriers team is a contender. The rushing attack for the Terriers is one of best in Brevard County with the two-headed monster at running back in Nate Lopez (334 yards) and Jamarion Stephens (262 yards), each accounting for four touchdowns. Titusville will host Fleming Island on Space Coast Daily TV with Steve and Orville of the Friday Night Locker Room on the call.

■ 6. Heritage (3-1) – The Panthers suffered a close loss on the road at Oviedo last week 42-35. Despite the loss, Heritage had a dominating start to the season by shutting out their first three-opponents by a combined score 97-0. The schedule doesn’t get easier for Heritage, as the Merritt Island Mustangs visit this week.

■ 7. Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy (3-1) – The 33-0 loss at Merritt Island in Week 4 was a little disappointing for the Tigers who were unbeaten before last week, but the season goals for Holy Trinity remain in-tact. The Tigers are still 3-1 after the loss to Merritt Island. Head Coach Hurlie Brown has a history of building a winning culture, but it takes time. Some would argue that Holy Trinity is ahead of schedule and is a sleeping giant with the state-of-the-art facilities and a coach who has a winning history. Making the playoffs is the goal but how far this team goes in the playoffs is a major question for a team with a limited roster size. Staying healthy will be key when it matters most.

In 1997, Dr. Jim Palermo, now Editor-in-Chief of Space Coast Daily, and Tom Palermo, now Space Coast Daily president and publisher, called the first-ever Brevard County high school football game on the radio.

From 1997 through 2000, the Palermo brothers called high school football action on WMEL and below is a clipping promoting the broadcasts out of the August 26, 1999 edition of Space Coast Press newspaper, which was owned and published by Tom Palermo. Gannett purchased the Press from Palermo in July 2000.

“One of the most memorable moments during those years was when we broadcast the Palm Bay – Dillard 2000 state championship game back to Brevard from the Swamp in Gainesville,” said Jim Palermo.

Dan Burke’s Palm Bay Pirates defeated Dillard 10-6 to win the 6A title that year.

The Palermo’s turned over the reins of the broadcasts to the Friday Night Locker Room team beginning in 2001. Since then, the Friday Night Locker Room hasn’t missed a beat as Steve Wilson and Orville Susong begin their 22nd full season broadcasting prep sports on the Space Coast.

In 2012, Space Coast Daily and the Friday Night Locker Room forged a partnership to bring Brevard County a one-of-a-kind comprehensive, cutting-edge multimedia youth and high school sports coverage, including football, volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, track and field, wrestling, bowling and more.
