BREVARD COUNTY • VIERA, FLORIDA – Todd Pokrywa, the philanthropic president of The Viera Company in Brevard County on Florida’s Space Coast, was part of the festivities and action at the Northern Roots Hockey Tournament at Chelsea Piers in New York City, which brought together former National Hockey League players.

“I had an incredible weekend traveling from Viera on Florida’s Space Coast to the Chelsea Piers Sky Rink on Saturday, March 2 to support breast cancer awareness,” said Pokrywa.

This is the only pond hockey charity tournament where former NHL players come together to play hockey and bring awareness to the unique challenges and associated needs of young women, during and after breast cancer, and raise critical funds for iRise Above Breast Cancer’s critical mission programs that empower, inspire, and support them to heal and live well.

Team New Zealand: “I am honored to have had the experience to play on Team New Zealand alongside National Hockey League Alumni Bernie Nicholls, as well as a fantastic and welcoming group of guys including Captain John Haar, James Pizzitola, Alex Panlilio, Jack Lalime, Brian Markovich and Josh Choiniere,” said Todd Pokrywa.

“We dominated the tournament with a 7-0 record, and I even managed to contribute with a goal and a couple of assists. It was also a thrill to play against other NHL Alumni such as Dmitri Khirstich, Kevin Westgarth, Mike Bullard, Terry Virtue, Morris Lukowich, Doug Crossman, and Greg Meredith.”

Pokrywa said what made this experience even more special was knowing that the tournament raised $60,000 for the iRise Above Breast Cancer Foundation, supporting young women impacted by breast cancer.

“Many thanks to Northern Roots’ Boe Leslie for the invitation to participate and so I could be part of the effort to support this meaningful cause,” said Pokrywa. “Let’s continue to empower and inspire others to rise above these difficult challenges and create a brighter future together!”
