BREVARD COUNTY •TITUSVILLE, FLORIDA – Titusville Fire Department Driver Operator/Paramedic Shawn Holbrook was recognized for his heroic actions in the early morning hours of Saturday, February 17.

Holbrook and his wife were at a convenience store at Garden Street and Dixie Avenue when the power flickered. Someone came up and related there was an accident at South Park Avenue and Garden Street.

Holbrook and his wife got into his truck and drove over to the accident location, locating the vehicle which had extensive damage noted to the front end.

With the vehicle smoking, on fire, and the doors locked, Holbrook and other bystanders attempted to break the windows.

One bystander found a rock and broke the rear driver’s side window, at which time Holbrook crawled inside. Through smoke and limited visibility, he was able to move the airbag, access the patient, and then access the door handle to open the door.

With assistance from bystanders, Holbrook was able to get the patient, who was slumped over and semi-conscious, in a position to remove them from the vehicle.

Once out, they continued to move the patient a safe distance away, as the vehicle was becoming well involved in fire. Once the patient was removed and cleared of the vehicle, he then began to assess the patient for injuries until our units arrived on the scene.

When Titusville Fire Department’s E11 unit arrived, the vehicle was fully involved. Were it not for his actions, and the assistance received from bystanders, the accident could have been fatal.

As a result of the events that night,  Holbrook received the Meritorious Service Award, and surrounded by several members of the department was very humble when receiving the award, remarking that, “Any one of you all would have done it.”

“We are proud of his actions, but not surprised,” said a Titusville Fire Department spokesperson. “The men and women of Titusville Fire are committed to service before self. Congratulations Shawn!”
