BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Melbourne Police are investigating a fatal crash involving pedestrians that killed a 3-year-old child and injured the 31-year-old mother Sunday night near Dairy Road and Hall Street.
Police say they crash happened at approximately 8:23 p.m. when the Melbourne Police Department responded to the area of Dairy Road and Hall Street regarding a vehicle vs. pedestrian crash.
When officer arrived, they discovered a juvenile pedestrian had sustained serious bodily injuries as a result of the crash.
The parent of the juvenile also sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash.
Initial investigation reveals the juvenile and two adults were exiting a vehicle parked southbound in the center lane of Dairy Road to return home.
The vehicle they were exiting also had a trailer attached. The juvenile was able to run from the parent, behind the trailer and into the northbound lanes of Dairy Road.
As the parent attempted to stop the child, they were both struck by a 2009 Honda Pilot being driven northbound.
It appears alcohol/drugs were not a factor in this crash.
The injured mother of the child has been identified 31-year-old Cassandra Lyn Becher from Melbourne.
Police say the driver of the vehicle is identified as Stephanos Maminakis, 56, from Melbourne.
The crash is still under investigation.
