BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Melbourne Police, along with several agencies across Brevard County and a Good Samaritan, are being called heroes after saving two people who had capsized their boat Saturday night in the Indian River Lagoon.
Police say the incident happened around 7:27 p.m. on Saturday, February 10.
Melbourne Police Officers responded to the Indian River Lagoon in the vicinity of 2929 Riverview Drive about a distress call from a capsized
boat in the Indian River Lagoon.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered the boat in distress approximately two miles south of the 192 Causeway, in the river with the boat occupants in distress.
The boat that had capsized had two individuals aboard and were holding onto the boat while speaking with the Melbourne Police Department Communications Center.
A multi-agency rescue effort then ensued to try to recover the occupants from the water as quickly as possible.
First responders from Melbourne Police Department, Melbourne Fire Rescue, Indialantic Police Department, Melbourne Beach Police Department and the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Aviation unit, then worked jointly to retrieve the subjects from the water.
As first responders worked to get a rescue boat into the water, an unidentified Good Samaritan came upon the people in distress and assisted in rescue efforts as he had them board his boat.
The people in distress shortly thereafter were picked up by Melbourne Fire Rescue boat and transported to the Front Street boat ramp.
Upon their arrival to the boat ramp, the two occupants of the capsized boat received on site medical treatment as a precaution.
At the time of this press release both occupants on the boat have been medically cleared and released from a hospital, with no injuries sustained during the boating incident.
The capsized boat was described as a 17 foot in length, “Aqua Sport” boat from one of the people involved.
The events that lead to the boat taking on water and capsizing are unknown.
No other details are available in reference to all involved, and there is no further law enforcement investigation into this incident.
