BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Brevard County Sheriff’s Office outlined a new scam that is circulating around the area that is targeting pet owners of lost pets.

In a video release entitled ‘Lunch and Learn’, Sheriff Ivey provides details in how these scammers are gaining access to private information and using it.

Sheriff Ivey says one of the scams includes a scammer calling a number on the lost pet sign and saying they found the lost animal on the poster. The scammer then has the cell phone carrier on the other phone line to send a code to the person they are pretending to be to gain access to your account.

After the text code is sent to the customer, the scammer has the victim read back that code to them where they then gain access to your personal account information.

The scammers will pretend to be an Animal Enforcement Officer, as well.

Never respond to scam messages.

Brevard County Sheriff’s Office says they will never handle an issue this way.
