BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – How does one grow up in a small town like Philadelphia, Mississippi, make his way to Brevard County, work as an electrical engineer at NASA, all the while, making an incredibly positive impact with his charitable work? I found out the answer to that question when I had the opportunity to sit down and talk with William “Bill” Gary.

Gary is currently the president of the Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore Cultural Complex and is also president of the North Brevard County Branch NAACP. However, that only scratches the surface of his community involvement.

Gary told me he had, “loving parents, we had teachers who went above and beyond the usual six hours of instruction that you normally get in schools.” Growing up, he was told by many people that education, “was the key to a better life.”

After graduating from high school, and then, Tennessee State University, in Nashville, Tennessee, Gary was offered a job at the Kennedy Space Center. He proudly worked as an electrical engineer for 40 years before retiring in 2008.

I asked Gary why, even after retiring from NASA, he continues to work hard and give back to the community. He told me, “There are too many things to be addressed in this world.” He continued, “You just see things happening, or not happening, that you feel that you can help. So, you decide to sacrifice some time and you find the answers. But at the end of the day, I always feel that it’s worth it.”

Gary has truly been a godsend to the Space Coast. His impact over the years has been immeasurable. His mantra, “give back to the community,” says it best.

So, the answer to the question at the top of the article is, hard work, perseverance, a philosophy of giving back, and a strong education. That sums up William “Bill” Gary.
