State Rep. for Brevard Tyler Sirois is addressing members of the Space Coast Patriots during their monthly meeting at the Merritt Island Library to detail his reasons for not supporting the incorporation of Merritt Island.
During last Tuesday’s Brevard County Commission meeting, the nearly two dozen Merritt Islanders that addressed the commissioners slammed the proposal for various reasons – including what they said was a bogus feasibility study.
Merritt Island resident John Weiler said the vast majority of the 45,000 Islanders don’t want the additional taxation and red tape another layer of unneeded government would surely bring.
Sirois has come out against the incorporation and said he would not support it as incorporation would require the approval of the State Legislature – and the voters of Merritt Island.
“If I were to sponsor this act, I would be breaking a pledge to my constituents to support policies that reduce the scope of government and tax burden on families and small businesses,” Sirois said in a letter to pro-incorporation supporters.
“Given my positions on limited government and low taxes, positions upon which my constituents are well-informed, I view deference to a referendum question as essentially passing the buck on a policy decision for which I am willing to accept responsibility. With high interest rates, inflation, and legislative reforms to the homeowners insurance market still evolving, I cannot in good conscience advance a policy that potentially increases the financial burden on families and small businesses.”
Despite the legitimacy of the $40,000 feasibility study being called into question, the Brevard County Commission voted to accept it.
