BREVARD COUNTY • WEST MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – West Melbourne School for Science marked the commencement of construction on its state-of-the-art classroom building dedicated to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics education.

A Brevard Public Schools spokesperson said that the groundbreaking ceremony witnessed the unveiling of plans for an innovative facility designed to improve students’ educational experiences.

“The new building, slated for completion in January 2025, underscores BPS’ commitment to providing cutting-edge educational opportunities,” said the BPS spokesperson.

“The facility promises to cultivate creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration among students by boasting advanced amenities, including modern science labs, a dedicated STEAM lab, an art classroom, and a music classroom.”

The ceremony commenced with a musical performance by the West Melbourne School for Science Choir and speakers included BPS Superintendent Dr. Mark Rendell, WMSS Principal Theresa Benson, School Board member Katye Campbell, West Melbourne Mayor Pat Bentley, BPS Assistant Superintendent of Facilities Services Sue Hann, and Wharton-Smith Construction’s Johnathan Wilkes.

“This expansion will not only allow more students to attend and experience our school, our incredible faculty, and our STEAM focus, but it will also impact and expand the minds of not only our current students but our future students to think bigger,” Benson said.

The construction of the new building aims to enhance the learning environment and accommodate a growing student body, ensuring more individuals can benefit from WMSS’ exceptional programs and initiatives.
