BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – In coordination with the Florida Department of Transportation’s statewide Target Zero initiative, Brevard County announced a strategic partnership with Best Foot Forward for Pedestrian Safety, a grassroots coalition dedicated to elevating pedestrian safety standards.

The official launch of the Best Foot Forward program in Brevard County will be marked by a presentation and a resolution of support at the upcoming Brevard County Commission meeting on January 9 at 5 p.m. in Viera.

This collaborative initiative seeks to enhance the safety of Brevard County streets, focusing on increasing compliance with Florida law, which mandates drivers to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks.

Brevard County’s commitment to pedestrian safety aligns with the BFF program, a pivotal effort administered by Bike/Walk Central Florida in collaboration with FDOT. This partnership supports FDOT’s Target Zero initiative, an ambitious goal to reduce transportation-related serious injuries and fatalities throughout Florida to zero.

In 2023, Brevard County had 22 cyclist and pedestrian fatalities. Acknowledging the pressing need for action, FDOT recognizes Brevard County as one of the 25 most dangerous counties in the state for pedestrian and bicycle fatalities.

Joining forces with over 35 regional partners in Orange, Seminole, and Osceola Counties, Brevard County’s participation in the Best Foot Forward program cements its position in one of the largest grassroots coalitions nationwide dedicated to lowering pedestrian fatalities and injuries.

Best Foot Forward adopts a comprehensive “Triple E” approach, combining community education, low-cost engineering, and high-visibility enforcement to incrementally change both driver and pedestrian behavior.

Brevard County commits to actively engaging in this transformative strategy over the coming months, working closely with partners to identify, monitor, and enforce key crosswalks across the county.
