BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Each FIRST Robotics Competition season includes district and regional events where qualifying teams compete for awards and a spot at the FIRST Robotics Championship event.

It offers students an amazing experience as they celebrate their hard work, have fun, make new friendships, and are exposed to ideas and ideologies that will enhance their lives for decades to come.

Every participant is eligible to apply for college scholarships! This year, three schools from Brevard County were represented at the Smoky Mountain regionals in Knoxville, Tennessee, held March 3-6.

Viera & Westshore Jr./Sr. High team 7431 Wingspan went 9-6-1 and brought home the:

■ Team Sustainability Award

Cocoa Jr./Sr. High & Holy Trinity team 1592 Bionic Tigers went 7-7-0 and brought home the:

Industrial Design award

The big winners were team 801 Horsepower of Merritt Island – Merritt Island High and Edgewood Jr./Sr. High – who won:

■ Autonomous Award as well as going 17-1-0 to win the regional

This win qualifies Team 801 Horsepower for the Championship in Houston, April 17-20.

Founded in 1989 by inventor Dean Kamen, FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a global nonprofit (501(c)(3)) organization that prepares young people for the future through a suite of inclusive, team-based robotics programs for ages 4-18 (PreK-12).

The programs are suitable for schools or structured afterschool activities and receive support from a vast network of volunteers, educators, and sponsor/donors including over 200 Fortune 500 companies.

Because the programs are More Than Robots®, FIRST participants are guided by a signature set of Core Values to conduct research, fundraise, design, build, and showcase their achievements.

The thrilling, sports-like challenges build their self-confidence and collaborative problem-solving skills and have a proven and lasting impact on STEM learning and interest. The participants and alumni gain access to education and career discovery opportunities, connections to exclusive scholarships and employers, and a place in the FIRST community for life.
